Formal analysis is like the skeleton of art, providing a structure to explore and answer questions about a piece using visual elements. It focuses on basics like color, line, space, texture, and scale.

In color, we consider hue (red, blue, green), value (dark or light), and intensity (bright or dull). Lines, whether horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, define forms and convey information through their character and direction. Space, which is three-dimensional, can be negative or positive, depending on its relationship to objects. Texture, felt through touch, can be physical or conveyed visually (hard, soft, rough, smooth). Scale indicates the size of the artwork and emphasizes or de-emphasizes elements.

Mona Lisa (between 1503 and 1505)
Artist: Leonardo da Vinci
  • Now, looking at the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, it’s a portrait of a woman sitting in a chair with a mysterious smile and captivating eyes. The landscape in the background appears blurry and surreal, with an imbalance in the rocky right side compared to the flatlands on the left. The portrait is famous for its enigma, as Mona Lisa’s expression suggests internal or psychological depth.
  • The colors play a crucial role, with dark hues in Mona’s dress contrasting the lighter background. Lines on her skin and background differ from those on her dress. The painting impresses with its smooth blending of colors without clear edges.
  • Mona Lisa appears regal, draped in luxurious fabric, and even the background suggests a sense of ownership. The beauty lies in the viewer’s interpretation, adding to the mystery. Some even speculate it might be da Vinci’s self-portrait in a feminine form.

The Museum of Science in Boston, MA, improved my understanding of formal analysis, inspiring a desire to learn, explore, and travel through different times and places. Studying art opens doors to interpreting how artists express ideas through their work.
